British author L.P. Hartley (1895–1972) once said "The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there." His observation is interesting and very true. The study of history—in our case the 18th-century—is like exploring an place where the technology, laws, clothing, customs, and even the language is unfamiliar. This month's feature article discusses 18th-century language, or the King's English.

National History Day, a year-long education program that engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics, has announced the 2004 contest theme of "Rights and Responsibilities in History." Learn More.
